Sun protection at the seaside: enjoy the sun without a care in the world
========================================================================

The sun doesn’t just provide warmth, but also a sense of well-being. Provided, of course, that you enjoy it in moderation and take care **to use** sun protection, especially **when on holiday by the sea** . That’s hardly a secret anymore. But why is the sun even more intense by the water? And why is ‘staying indoors’ not an option either?

 Why is the sun important?
-------------------------

We generally associate the sun with positive things. This isn’t just because it provides warmth; it’s also because the brain releases **serotonin**, the **‘happiness hormone’**, when sunlight hits our eyes. A good mood, inner peace, more energy and better sleep follow almost automatically. When the sun shines, we feel lighter, more active and happier. This effect usually sets in after just a few minutes outdoors. We already know, of course, that the sea also has **numerous positive effects** on our well-being. Combined – sun by the sea – this creates a real ‘happiness boost’.

The UVB rays in sunlight are also responsible for the production of **vitamin D**. We need it for healthy bones and teeth, a strong immune system, strong muscles and our metabolism. If we do not produce enough vitamin D, the result is **tiredness**, low mood and susceptibility to infections. It is also sunlight that signals to our body to stop producing melatonin – it is responsible for sleep.

How much sun do we need?
------------------------

In winter, we often struggle to get enough sunlight. This could also be one of the reasons why, during the **darker months of the year**, many people complain of low mood and seasonal mood swings, known as ‘winter blues’. In spring and summer, we find it much easier. Around **10 to 20 minutes of sunlight**, ideally in the morning or late afternoon, is a good idea. Of course, we get much more sun during a holiday by the sea.

Water reflects up to 90 per cent of UV radiation, whilst light-coloured sand still reflects 25 per cent. This means that the sun’s rays are **much more intense at the seaside** than inland. The cooling sea breeze and fresh water also trick our senses: we don’t even notice that **sunburn** is already forming on our skin. It’s also important to know that UV radiation is particularly high in southern countries. Caution is therefore advised, especially between 11 am and 4 pm.

Why do we need to protect our skin?
-----------------------------------

Sunlight consists of UVA and UVB rays. The former penetrate deep into the skin and can **cause damage** there. This can lead to premature skin ageing, increased wrinkling, and a higher risk of skin cancer. UVB rays are the ones that **cause sunburn**. They damage the upper layer of the skin. We now know that even just five severe sunburns in a lifetime can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer. Sunburn is **not a souvenir** – it is a warning sign!

 Enjoy the sun safely
--------------------

Fortunately, however, we now have not only the necessary knowledge but also the ideal products to **prevent sun damage**. Enjoying the sun without regret or fear – it really is possible! Your most important tools are high-quality sun protection products. Here’s what you should look out for when choosing them:

- Use broad-spectrum sun protection that blocks UVA and UVB rays
- The fairer your skin, the higher the sun protection factor (SPF) should be. There is absolutely no reason not to use SPF 50 as a general rule.
- Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or if you have been sweating heavily
- Radiation is at its strongest between 11 am and 4 pm. It’s best to stay in the shade during this time. Why not pop in for a coffee under a parasol during these hours?
- When snorkelling and swimming, it’s easy to lose track of time. Wear UV-protective shirts
- Make sure you also protect your head and eyes from the sun; hats and sunglasses are an absolute must-pack for your seaside holiday!
- Many sun creams contain chemical UV filters such as oxybenzone or octinoxate. These can damage coral reefs. Look for reef-friendly sun cream that is **free from microplastics**, nanoparticles and harmful filters

 Tip!
----

Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids. After sunbathing, your skin needs extra care. Shower with lukewarm water and use pH-neutral, mild **shower products**. Don’t rub your skin dry; instead, pat it gently. After-sun lotions provide the skin with sufficient moisture, relieve tightness and redness, and soothe the skin. Products containing aloe vera, panthenol, chamomile or hyaluronic acid are ideal.
