# Typical of Croatia: Lignjolov as an autumn pastime | Hotel Lemongarden - Brač Kroatien

A typical autumn tradition in Croatia: Lignjolov
================================================

 When the weather starts to cool and autumn arrives on Brač, it is time for **Lignjolov** once again. This traditional Croatian pastime is popular throughout the country and, in many places, has even become a social event. We reveal what lies behind the term and how **guests at Hotel Lemongarden** can become part of this authentic experience themselves.

 What is Lignjolov?
------------------

 Lignjolov refers to the autumn pastime of fishing for squid or calamari (“lignja” means squid and “lov” means fishing or hunting). This recreational activity is popular not only on Brač, but **along the entire Adriatic coast**. The main season runs from August to December, although in Croatia it is especially common to go **lignjolov fishing** in autumn and winter.

There are essentially two ways to go about it: either fishing directly from the shore, known as “eging”, for example from a harbour wall, or heading out in a small boat using techniques such as “tataki” or “panula”.

The more common and popular method is **eging**, or fishing from the shore. The key is to choose a spot where you can cast into deep water and where there is at least some current. Rocks, piers and harbour walls are particularly suitable. Another advantage is the **artificial lighting** from street lamps or nearby houses, which attracts small fish that in turn serve as prey for squid.

With **tataki fishing**, several small lures are suspended beneath the boat, while with **panula fishing**, the lure is slowly towed close to the seabed.

 From necessity to a Croatian delicacy
-------------------------------------

 Squid fishing originally developed out of necessity. During the cooler autumn and winter months, fish such as sardines and mackerel became scarce, while squid moved closer to the coast – not only to hunt, but also to spawn. For local people, they therefore became an **important source of food**. In the past, squid was often cooked whole over an open wood fire. Today, **Croatian squid is considered a delicacy** and can also be found on the menus of fine-dining restaurants.

 Give squid fishing a go in Croatia
----------------------------------

 Lignjolov is deeply rooted in Croatian culture. As soon as darkness falls **in autumn**, bright lights begin to appear all along the coast. They belong to fishermen setting out in search of this prized delicacy. Squid are nocturnal, which is why fishing is especially popular at dusk, in the early morning and **around the full moon**. Successfully landing a squid takes experience, patience and a careful approach.

Anyone who would like to try squid fishing from the shore needs to obtain a fishing licence. This can easily be purchased via the website of the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture. **Guests at Hotel Lemongarden** benefit from the hotel’s unique location. As it is situated directly by the harbour, all they have to do is cross the waterfront promenade before casting their line. The **harbour of Sutivan** is considered something of an insider tip among fishermen. The water is deep enough, there are favourable currents, and the waterfront is well lit. And once the fishing is done, it is only a few steps back to the hotel’s **luxurious rooms and suites**.

 Tip!
----

 In mid-October, the harbour of Sutivan often hosts the popular “Je bilo sriće?” (“Did you have any luck?”) Lignjolov fishing competition. It is a **social event** that attracts numerous fishermen and spectators. During the Olive Festival, our guests can also head out to sea with an experienced fisherman and learn the basics of Lignjolov first-hand.
