Why are active holidays so popular?
In the past, a holiday meant one thing above all else: blissful idleness. Add to that the odd cocktail, sunshine, the sea and good food – and you had the perfect dream holiday. In recent years, however, health awareness has increased across the board. And there are more fitness enthusiasts than ever before. They don’t want to go without exercise even whilst on holiday. Their training plans and routines are part of their lives. If they can’t stick to them, dissatisfaction automatically sets in.
So whilst for some, exercise is so firmly integrated into their daily lives that it’s indispensable even when travelling, others want to use their holiday as an opportunity to finally get active. And perhaps even to discover a new passion. Who knows, perhaps there’s a mountain bike enthusiast or long-distance swimmer slumbering within you? As Dalmatia’s largest island, Brač fortunately has a wide range of options on offer for anyone wishing to spend an active holiday in Croatia.
Cycling on Brač
Spanning an area of 396 square kilometres, the island of Brač boasts 25 well-signposted cycle routes. These vary in length and terrain, meaning that leisure cyclists, families and experienced riders alike can find their perfect route. The St. Jurja cycle route, for example, should be on your bucket list. It starts in Supetar, 7 kilometres from the Hotel Lemongarden, and crosses the entire island. It is quite challenging. However, anyone who completes the whole route can be awarded the title of “King of Brač” by the Supetar Tourist Board.
The St. Roko Cycle Route, however, is much easier. It also starts in Supetar, is 14 kilometres long and follows partly tarmac-surfaced paths along the coast to Sutivan. Of course, you can also cycle it in the opposite direction and join the route right outside the Hotel Lemongarden. The cycle route is also easily manageable with children. Also starting from Sutivan, the 17-kilometre-long Tramuntana cycle path takes you to some beautiful spots on the island. Along the way, you pass the hills of Sv Roko, the votive church of the same name and its catacombs, as well as the pretty seaside villages of Bobovišća and Ložišća.
10 kilometres south of the Lemongarden Hotel , the equally popular Medulla cycle path begins . It is 109 kilometres long and leads up to the highest peak of the Croatian islands, Vidova Gora. Our guests can hire modern bicycles directly at the hotel and set off on a two-wheeled exploration tour.
Hiking on Brač
Whether along the coast, through olive groves in the island’s interior, past romantic villages or up to Vidova Gora: hiking on Brač offers a wealth of variety. From Vidova Gora, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the island, whilst the Via Brattia trail circles the island over a distance of 140 kilometres. Hikers are particularly drawn to the historical features along the route. As it is a circular trail, you can start from any point on the route, including Sutivan. Keep an eye out for the blue and white markings. Along the way, you can collect stamps for your hiking map at 12 locations (available at information centres, including in Sutivan).
A home away from home for your active holiday in Croatia
Of course, you don’t have to set off on a long hike or mountain bike ride to make your active holiday in Croatia a varied one. You can also satisfy your urge to get active right here at the Lemongarden Hotel. We have a well-equipped gym with modern equipment. Free weights and Technogym cardio machines are available. If you’d prefer something a little gentler, we recommend a yoga class. It’s a particularly lovely way to get into the flow right on the beach.
