Brač in autumn

Croatia is often on people’s radar, especially in the summer. And with good reason – after all, its crystal-clear sea is just as legendary as its cuisine. But it’s just as worth a visit in the off-season. Here are the five best reasons to visit Brač in the autumn.

24 September 2025

1. The weather

Whilst elsewhere it’s already rather damp and wet, visitors to the island of Brač are still enjoying pleasant weather. Days are usually sunny and temperatures can still reach up to 20 °C, even in October. The sea is still as warm as 21 °C – so if you like a dip in the water, now’s the time to give your immune system a proper boost with a plunge into the sea. Although it does rain now and then, rainfall is generally kept to a minimum.

With days lasting 11 hours and around nine hours of sunshine daily, autumn on Brač is an excellent time to soak up the sun. This is good for both mind and body – think vitamin D. UV radiation is now fairly moderate, meaning the risk of sunburn is already somewhat lower; in most cases, SPF 50 is probably no longer necessary. However, sun cream and sunglasses should still be your constant companions.

2. The heavenly tranquillity of the off-season

Once the peak season is over, a sense of calm returns to Brač. Most of the visitors have now left. This gives guests the chance to discover the island’s authentic side, experience its slower pace, and enjoy a glass of wine, the national drink Raija, or a Pelinkovac alongside the locals.

Reservations are no longer required in most restaurants, and the bays, which were never overcrowded even in summer, are now completely deserted. Combined with the golden autumn light, this offers photography enthusiasts the ideal opportunity to take some beautiful shots of the island, completely free of people.

3. Autumn events on Brač

About 12 kilometres south of Sutivan lies the small village of Dračevica. It is one of the oldest villages on the island, as evidenced by its many old stone houses and narrow streets. The village’s roots date back to the Middle Ages. For just as long, the two patron saints, Cosmas and Damian, have been celebrated here every year on 26 September. A solemn mass is followed by a small procession, then a village fair featuring local specialities, singing and dancing. During the festival of Saints Cosmas and Damian, visitors have the opportunity to become part of the local community for a short while.

Just a few days later, on 30 September, the patron saint Jere (Jerome) is commemorated in Pučišća, some 30 kilometres away. The festival lasts several days and features concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances. Incidentally, Jerome is not just a local figure. He is also venerated as the patron saint of the whole of Dalmatia and is known in this region as the translator of the Bible into Latin.

4. Autumn in the Sign of the Olive

The fact that olives, their harvest and olive oil play an important role on the island is now well known far beyond Croatia’s borders. After all, the World Olive Harvesting Championship takes place on Brač every autumn. To this end, every October since 2017, the best olive pickers have been coming to Postira to compete against each other in teams of four (two male and two female members). They impressively demonstrate their speed whilst picking by hand. The teams must also put their knowledge of olives to the test in a quiz. Guests are amazed by the nimble hands, enjoy tastings and entertaining evenings. The eighth edition takes place from 9 to 12 October.

The atmosphere at the Olive Festival at the Hotel Lemongarden is much more relaxed and not at all competitive. Here too, the olive takes centre stage, but instead of competing against one another, hotel guests gather in the Lemongarden olive grove to harvest the green fruits together. The olives are then pressed into delicious olive oil, which makes a wonderful souvenir. The supporting programme here is also impressive. It consists of culinary delights, wine tastings and plenty of music. This year, the Olive Festival takes place from 22 to 26 October.

5. Ideal conditions for active people

The island of Brač is a haven for active visitors. As well as plenty of cycling and mountain biking trails, keen walkers can enjoy almost endless hiking opportunities here. Whether along the coast, through olive groves in the island’s interior, past romantic villages or up to Vidova Gora: hiking on Brač offers a wide variety of experiences. From Vidova Gora, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the island, whilst the Via Brattia takes you all the way round the island over a distance of 140 kilometres.
