Hurkle Durkle

A lovely morning routine

When you hear the phrase ‘morning routine’, you don’t necessarily have to think of cold showers, tedious skincare rituals or even a workout before your first cup of coffee. Morning routines can certainly be very cosy and relaxed too. One such routine is known as ‘Hurkle Durkle’. But what does the term mean? And why does ‘Hurkle Durkle’ work so well at the Lemongarden Hotel?

An idea from Scotland

Whilst ‘Hurkle Durkle’ has only gained a degree of popularity in recent years thanks to the internet, the term and the concept behind it have been around for a long time. There is reportedly evidence that the word has been in use since as early as 1808 . It is a combination of ‘hurkle’, which means ‘to curl up’, and ‘durkle’. Durkle on its own has no real equivalent in German. As a compound, Hurkle Durkle describes staying in bed after waking up.

According to John Jamieson’s Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language from 1808, it refers to relaxing in bed to start the day gently. Why the Scots, of all people – who are considered warm-hearted but as rugged as their landscape – attached so much importance to this concept that they gave it its own term is unknown. We are grateful to them for it nonetheless, for who doesn’t appreciate enjoying a coffee in the morning without any stress, perhaps reading a few pages, and only then getting up? The good news: Hurkle Durkle works absolutely perfectly at the Lemongarden Hotel!

A Scottish custom in Croatia

So how does Hurkle Durkle work in practice? You don’t really need much to do it. Just a bit of time. You can find that on a working day by setting your alarm 20 minutes earlier. And you should have plenty of time for it on holiday anyway. At the Lemongarden Hotel, you can enjoy breakfast by the sea until 11 am. So there’s no rush here either. After waking up, throw the windows wide open and let the fresh sea breeze flow into your room or suite. You might even hear the harbour promenade right outside the hotel coming to life in the morning.

Consciously savour the vibrant colours used in the design of your accommodation. Fine silk fabrics and carpets by Missoni and Paul Smith create an unrivalled sense of comfort. Help yourself to a drink from the minibar and snuggle back into the snow-white bed linen. Surrounded by an ambience reminiscent of a French country house, you can let your mind wander before your day’s holiday begins, with all the possibilities it holds.

Is Hurkle Durkle healthy?

If you don’t rush around in the morning, you’re bound to start the day with a clearer mind. And it’s now widely recognised that lower stress levels have a positive impact on our physical and mental performance, whilst also bringing health benefits. The key is that this downtime should be limited in duration. It’s about consciously savouring the moment, not about avoiding important activities like work. Even if that would be lovely. Those who regularly practise ‘hurkle-durklet’ learn that rest is anything but a waste of time. Just make sure, outside of holiday periods, to set an extra alarm for the end of your ‘hurkle-durklet’ time. After all, too much idleness isn’t beneficial in the long run either. Don’t use this time for doomscrolling or social media, otherwise the relaxing effect will vanish immediately.

Start your day with our wonderful breakfast right by the harbour. Crispy croissants, delicious coffee and an unbeatable setting set the tone for your holiday. Continue your relaxing day at our beach club by the sea or with a yoga session on the beach.
