Meaningful resolutions for 2026
New Year’s Eve – and with it the night when most people traditionally make their New Year’s resolutions – is already behind us. But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to set yourself a few goals for the coming year. After all, according to the Chinese horoscope, the Year of the Fire Horse doesn’t begin until 17 February. And anyone who makes sensible resolutions for 2026 now is doing so at a time when others have already given up.
5 January 2026
A fresh start as a process
In Croatia, too, it is customary to set goals for the new year. They are called “nove odluke” (new resolutions) or “dobre odluke” (good resolutions). The Croatian terms aptly illustrate that the path to a healthier lifestyle, more exercise, less alcohol or greater self-discipline is, in fact, a process. After all, sticking to resolutions in the long term requires staying the course. And making good decisions. All too often, the plans made on New Year’s Eve fail as early as January, usually around the second Friday of the new year. This date is known as “Quitters Day” and marks the day when gym attendance effectively shifts back to fast-food restaurants.
There are many reasons why New Year’s resolutions fail. One has to do with the way we make them: vaguely, not wholeheartedly or of our own volition, without a plan and without proper motivation. The good news: anyone who believes a little in astrology has a good chance in the Year of the Fire Horse of actually putting meaningful resolutions for 2026 into practice.
What does the Year of the Fire Horse mean?
According to the Chinese horoscope, the Year of the Fire Horse brings plenty of dynamism, courage, determination, freedom and change. It is also said to provide the drive needed for new beginnings and make it easier to pursue goals. According to the Chinese horoscope, this makes it the ideal time for important decisions, breaking new ground and advancing creative projects.
It is believed that in the Year of the Fire Horse – which, incidentally, lasts until 5 February 2027 – action and personal responsibility will be rewarded. Those who are ready to seize opportunities and take on responsibility can look forward to career advancement. Apparently, in the Year of the Fire Horse, we also feel an extra burst of energy to finally put long-planned projects into action. Which brings us back to the key phrase: meaningful resolutions for 2026.
Resolutions that do you good
Wanting to change something in your own life or making a course correction is not a bad thing. On the contrary. It is the only way we can grow. But for this to succeed, you should let go of everything you have set out to do simply to please other people. Anything you do not do for yourself requires an incredible amount of effort and is usually not crowned with success. Instead, it makes much more sense to identify areas of life that we want to change for our own sake. So why not combine pleasure with practicality this year and, instead of the same old plans doomed to failure, try putting these into practice:
- Read for at least half an hour every day, ideally before going to sleep.
- Reduce social media usage to 30 minutes a day.
- Spend half an hour in the fresh air every day.
- Plan a little time out more often, for example at our beautiful boutique hotel by the sea. In the Year of the Fire Horse, we have plenty of energy, which is why it is all the more important to take conscious breaks. Otherwise, even the fiercest Fire Horse risks burning out.
- Declutter. 2026 is a good time to let go of old things, patterns, commitments and relationships.
- Pursue a creative project. You could, for example, dust off the piano again or pick up your knitting needles.
- Learn something new. Croatian may seem very difficult at first glance, but when, if not in the Year of the Fire Horse, is the right time to undertake such a project? Alternatively, you could start by baking Breskvice.
- Get more sleep. Sleep is healthy, and getting enough good-quality sleep is important for both physical and mental performance.
