Why we’re treating ourselves this year
Christmas is a celebration of love. But it’s also a time for giving. Whilst we often spend Advent racking our brains over what to put under the Christmas tree for our loved ones, we frequently forget about ourselves. Yet there’s no harm in treating yourself to a present every now and then. In fact, it’s actually good for you!

What happens when you give a gift?
When you give a gift to someone else, you benefit from it too. This is because when we give gifts, the giver’s brain also releases dopamine and oxytocin. This cocktail of hormones triggers a feeling of joy and contentment within us. Giving gifts amplifies our own positive emotions. It also allows us to demonstrate our generous nature to some extent and earns us gratitude and recognition. Nature has arranged this very cleverly, as gifts act as a kind of social glue. And because both sides benefit, it ensures that this practice, which is important for society, does not die out.
For the recipient, too, gifts often hold a value that goes beyond their price tag. After all, anyone who receives a present that has clearly been chosen with love feels valued. They are delighted, feel a boost to their self-esteem and are even happier in the long run. Studies show that gifts with high emotional value, such as a memento from a recent holiday at the Lemongarden Hotel, are particularly effective at bringing joy. Gift-giving is therefore an ancient ritual that strengthens relationships and also fulfils social functions.
Why we should treat ourselves
Things tend to get quite hectic, especially towards the end of the year. That’s precisely when it’s a good idea to treat yourself to something. It’s an act of self-care, a way of thanking yourself for a year of successfully overcoming challenges. In doing so, you’re boosting your self-esteem, triggering feelings of happiness and lifting your spirits. You can also practise self-reflection whilst searching for a gift: think about what truly brings you joy and what you’ve always wanted.
When you treat yourself, you feel more relaxed and balanced. Not only will those around you notice this, but you’ll also find that with a positive mindset, many tasks become easier and you can brush off annoyances more readily. Treating yourself improves your relationship with yourself and provides a lovely balance to the stresses of everyday life.
What do you enjoy doing?
Perhaps there’s been something material you’ve had your eye on for a while now – something you’ve always wanted. If so, Christmas is the perfect time to make that wish come true. Whether it’s a stylish pair of shoes, an item of clothing or something else entirely: now is the time! But in hectic times, time is of course particularly precious. When was the last time you allowed yourself the time to read a good book, spend an afternoon in a café or chat for hours on end with someone close to your heart?
The ultimate treat, of course, would be to treat yourself to a relaxing break by the sea. A few days at the Boutique Hotel Lemongarden on Brač will provide you with plenty of sunshine, culinary delights and a special kind of luxury. Treat yourself to these moments of peace and tranquillity.
