World Kindness Day: Kindness as a superpower
These days, it seems there’s a dedicated awareness day for just about everything. Kindness is no exception. Since 13 November 1998, various countries have been celebrating World Kindness Day. Particularly in schools in Australia, the USA, Canada and many other countries, including Italy and the UK, special events centred on the theme of being kind take place on this day. Why adults should get involved too, and why kindness can be a superpower.

Kindness: Being kind in its purest form
The term ‘kindness’ is not easy to translate from English. It is, in fact, a blend of niceness, goodwill, goodness, warmth and friendliness. It is an inner attitude or character trait comprising various facets. The motivation behind it is primarily intrinsic. This means that one does not expect anything in return from the other person. It is a selfless approach and attitude to life. Kindness is a character trait. However, it can also be practised. And this certainly has positive effects for oneself as well.
Why kindness matters
Those who go through life with a friendly attitude enjoy a number of social and emotional benefits. For instance, friendliness creates a sense of security and trust in a conversation. This strengthens bonds, makes collaboration easier and more pleasant, and is also contagious. Friendly acts can trigger a kind of chain reaction that encourages others to go through life with greater goodwill, generosity and kindness. At the same time, happiness hormones such as oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine are released. This improves our mood and makes us feel more content. At the same time, stress levels are reduced. It is well known that stress can be a major trigger for numerous lifestyle-related illnesses.
When stress levels are lower, the efficiency of our immune system automatically increases. According to studies, even heart health can improve through acts of kindness. Oxytocin has another benefit: it reduces inflammation. Kindness can be a real game-changer not only on a personal level, but also in the workplace. It creates a more positive atmosphere. As a result, employees are more motivated and receive more support from their colleagues. Tasks are completed more easily and effectively, and work becomes more enjoyable.
Genuine kindness
Now, there are people who find it easier to perform ‘acts of kindness’ and others who might need a bit more practice. Either way, it never hurts to consciously incorporate small, friendly gestures into your daily life. You’ll see how the people around you will change as a result. Even simple things like a smile or holding a door open can make a difference. Go through life mindfully and step in where help is needed. But remain authentic and only do what feels right. Those around you will react to you noticeably differently.
Kindness is, of course, also an essential part of hospitality. And we have perfected this at the Hotel Lemongarden. Our staff treat guests as equals. They are on hand to make the best time of the year – your holiday – even more enjoyable. After all, what would a boutique hotel with all the right facilities be without the people who bring warmth and soul to it?
Tip!
The Lemongarden Hotel is currently closed for the winter. We’ll be back to welcome you from 25 April 2026. Until then, we’ll be cleaning, renovating, carrying out repairs and taking a well-deserved rest. But you can secure your spot in the sun right now:
