Lemon blossom on Brač: a unique spectacle
The beautiful lemon trees bloom several times a year, especially along the Adriatic coast. The first lemon blossoms on Brač usually appear in March, and the spectacle continues until May. But why do the trees bloom several times? And why are lemons such interesting fruits?

The Lemongarden Hotel and its lemons
The ferry ride to the island of Brač takes about 50 minutes. It lies like a jewel in the middle of the sparkling Adriatic Sea and has many special features to offer. For example, it is home to the famous Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) beach and is also known for its white limestone. This was used, among other things, for the construction of the White House in Washington D.C. Another highlight is the lush Mediterranean vegetation. The conditions are perfect for growing olives, grapes, figs and lemons. The latter love the weather conditions in Dalmatia so much that they bloom several times a year.
While the first white blossoms usually appear in March, enveloping the trees in a cloud of fragrance, it is quite possible that the same trees will bloom again in late summer or early autumn. This leads to the curious effect of some plants bearing ripe lemons and fresh blossoms at the same time. Around 150 lemon trees grow in the lush garden of the Hotel Lemongarden, giving it its name. When they bloom, a special magic descends on this elegant boutique hotel by the sea.
The best lemons ever
On the one hand, the flowers are an important source of food for numerous beneficial insects, such as bees, and on the other hand, they are of course the basis for the wonderfully juicy lemons that are an important part of local agriculture and culture. They are also an important ingredient in Dalmatian cuisine. Classic dishes include riba na gradele (grilled fish with lemon juice), ligne na žaru (grilled squid with lemon) and pašticada. This is a festive dish of beef slowly braised in a sauce made from red wine, cloves, dried fruit and lemon peel.
Of course, lemons also add a special touch to desserts. Think, for example, of the Dalmatian lemon cake Padišpanj, crispy Kroštule or the classic lemon caramel pudding Rožata. In our Gelateria Rosa, located right on the harbour, you can enjoy delicious ice cream, mille-feuille and legendary lemon tarts from our patisserie! Of course, Lemongarden lemons are also found in other dishes – in perfect harmony with other fruits and organic vegetables from the hotel's own garden.
Free aromatherapy!
Of course, just looking out of the window of your elegant suite in the morning is usually enough to make your heart leap. The anticipation of a wonderful day filled with culinary delights and relaxing leisure time further lifts your spirits. And then there is the beguiling scent of lemon, which has a powerful effect on the psyche and well-being. It is used in aromatherapy as a natural mood enhancer. Studies show that the scent of lemon can stimulate the production of the happiness hormone serotonin and reduce the release of the stress hormone cortisol.
The fresh and clear scent can also help you concentrate and make you more mentally alert. Do you have an important email to write or a difficult decision to make? Find yourself a spot under one of our lemon trees! But their scent can do even more. For example, it can reduce feelings of anxiety, promote inner peace, give you energy and improve your responsiveness. Take a stroll to our lemon trees and see for yourself!
