Why Do Humans Love the Sea?
When we think of a summer holiday, a whole range of images comes to mind: sunshine, beaches and, above all, the sea. And this is despite the fact that most people did not grow up by the coast. The love of the sea is strong and seems to extend across many different cultures. But why is that? What does the sea do to us?

A Holiday for the Soul
This question is not that easy to answer. According to research, it is the result of several different factors coming together. On the one hand, there is, of course, socialisation. Even as children, we associate the sea with pleasant things, such as the feeling of freedom experienced during the summer holidays. Memories of eating ice cream, cooling off, splashing around in the water with our parents and collecting shells add another layer to these positive feelings. The sea has become a symbol of holidays. We experience a trace of these feelings of happiness even when we simply think about the ocean or look at pictures of it.
Those who are directly by the sea benefit from several other advantages that have a direct effect on the mind. The steady sound of the waves calms the nervous system because it is regular and consistent. From an evolutionary perspective, sounds like these convey a sense of safety. The brain does not have to make an effort to process them. As a result, it relaxes, and stress hormones such as cortisol also decrease in the rest of the body. Studies show that the sounds of water can lower blood pressure and ease pain.
A Love of the Sea: An Experience for the Senses
Our deep love of the sea may also have something to do with the fact that it appeals to all the senses. Our sense of touch feels the water, while the body enjoys cooling down on hot summer days. We taste the salt on our tongue, feel the soft, warm sand and smell the sea. We see the sparkling blue water and look towards the horizon. It reminds us that, in the grand scheme of the world, our own problems may only seem larger than they really are. Everyday life merges with the sky and the sea into something that lies far away in the distance.
Guests enjoying spring on Brač may still find the water a little fresh for swimming. In that case, our pool with its pleasantly warm temperatures is available. But you do not necessarily have to swim in the sea to enjoy its many positive effects. A walk by the water or simply letting your gaze wander is enough.
Our guests come very close to the water as early as breakfast. We serve it directly on the harbour promenade of Sutivan. Enjoy your morning coffee, crispy pastries and wonderful egg dishes while watching the fishermen head out in their boats. Whether you come in spring, summer or autumn, in the morning, at midday or in the evening: we are there for you with the same tireless dedication as the waves of the sea.
