Exploring nature from the boat

Anyone gazing into the distance from the beach at Hotel Lemongarden will notice the many white dots breaking up the blue between sea and sky. They are sailing boats, adding movement and variety to the panorama. Their crews are travelling between more than 1,000 islands. Most of them are so close together that you can sail by sight, which makes even beginners feel very comfortable in the coastal waters. And if the weather suddenly changes, the next bay is never far away.

The marina infrastructure is state of the art. The vast network of modern marinas offers plenty of opportunities to anchor, take a shower and explore the little towns along the coast almost at any time. Whether you are setting off on a longer sailing trip or simply enjoying a day excursion, sailing in Croatia is an unforgettable experience for all skill levels. The famous and reliable Maestral, the fair-weather wind, also plays an important role.

Croatia: a seafaring nation

Anyone sailing in Croatia is following in the footsteps of famous men. One of them is Ivo Višin, who became the first Croatian to sail around the world in February 1852. Marco Polo is known around the globe; what many people do not know, however, is that the Venetian was born on the Croatian island of Korčula, which at the time still belonged to Venice.

Half of the ship’s crew during the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition from 1872 to 1874 consisted of Croatian sailors. Sailing enthusiasts may also be familiar with the name Mladen Šutej. He was the first Croatian to cross the Atlantic alone in a sailing boat. He also rounded Cape Horn twice. Every year on 25 June, the Day of the Seafarer is celebrated worldwide, honouring not only the pioneers of the past but also today’s seafarers.

The most beautiful sailing areas around Brač

Conveniently, guests at Hotel Lemongarden only have to step outside to set off into one of the best sailing areas in Croatia. One particularly popular route is through the Hvar Channel, where sailors benefit greatly from the Maestral in summer. On the south-western side of the island, Lučice Bay offers something special: surrounded by pine forests, with a sandy seabed, it is a wonderful place for swimming.

Sailors also appreciate the northern coast of Hvar. It lies south of Brač and can be reached in a relatively short time. Just off the town of Hvar, the Pakleni Islands create picture-perfect scenery, with bays glowing in shades of turquoise. Hvar is also an excellent place to enjoy great food. Those with more time can continue on to Vis with its Blue Cave, the Blue Lagoon of Šolta or Komiža.
