Why do we buy souvenirs?
It seems to be human nature to buy or collect souvenirs. Even in ancient times, when pilgrimages took believers to holy sites, pilgrims would purchase small mementoes. These were often clay figurines, amulets or small vials of holy water. For Romans on pilgrimages, the statuettes or papyrus scrolls they brought back were often a kind of status symbol of education. By the Middle Ages at the latest, markets began to spring up around places of pilgrimage, specifically offering devotional items to the faithful. These souvenirs usually had not only sentimental value (‘se souvenir’ comes from French and means ‘to remember’), but also spiritual significance.
During the early modern period, as members of the nobility and wealthy citizens increasingly travelled across Europe, mementos took on a different significance. They often lost their religious connotations and became a kind of curiosity for those left at home. It was only when travel became more affordable thanks to the railway that souvenirs in the modern sense emerged. These included postcards, locally produced handicrafts, miniature replicas of landmarks and, eventually, fridge magnets.
The best souvenirs from Brač
Of course, everyone has different tastes. But most people want to take home a memento of their holiday that’s authentic, not just some run-of-the-mill trinket. Fortunately, the island of Brač has a number of special items to offer that are perfect for bringing a touch of joy back home. One example is products made from white Brač marble. This has been renowned for its quality for centuries and was even used in the construction of the White House in Washington D.C. and the Parliament building in Vienna. Travellers can, for example, buy wall clocks, figurines, jewellery, pendants and even cutlery made from Brač stone.
Near Dračevica, about a 20-minute drive from Sutivan, lavender fields scent the air in the warm Mediterranean sun. Lavender products are therefore particularly popular. Lavender sachets in the wardrobe not only provide a fresh scent, but also instantly transport you back to those carefree holiday days at the Lemongarden Hotel, just like the soaps and oils.

The white wines are wonderfully fresh, impressing with their robust structure, salty notes and pronounced minerality. It’s like a holiday right on your tongue! Some of the island’s finest wines come from the Stina Winery. Why not bring back one of these fine wines as a souvenir from Brač?
