Good for home and mind
The beautiful Lemongarden boutique hotel on the island of Brač, right by the sea, is currently still in hibernation. At least in theory. Because behind the scenes, things are anything but quiet. Quite the opposite! Many hard-working hands are currently busy preparing the hotel for the new season. After all, our guests deserve to experience the hotel at its very best. Keyword: spring cleaning. Which, by the way, makes sense even if you aren’t a hotel. Or don’t own one.

Why spring cleaning is important for your mental health
We’ve all been there: basically, the house is tidy and everything’s in its place. But really, it’s about time we gave the cupboards a good wipe-down and had a proper sort through the wardrobe. Deep down, we’re sure that the world looks a bit friendlier when viewed through clean windows. But where to start? Why bother at all, when the deep clean will be a thing of the past in a few months anyway? Well, psychological experts are certain that spring cleaning can work wonders for the mind.
After all, clearing up the chaos around us also helps to clear our minds. While sweeping and mopping, we can philosophise, reflect and mentally reorganise our lives. Because we see the immediate effects of our actions, we experience a series of small successes one after the other. These ensure that our bodies are flooded with happiness hormones. As these not only promote well-being but are also a natural counterbalance to the stress hormone cortisol, cleaning can also lead to better physical health, a stronger immune response and improved sleep.
Those who get rid of old clutter whilst tidying up also symbolically free themselves psychologically from mental baggage. Spring cleaning can be a symbol of a fresh start. The sense of control we exercise when tidying and organising can carry over into everyday life, reducing anxiety and boosting self-esteem. Studies also show that people in an organised environment are less distracted and therefore more creative and productive.
Tips for spring cleaning
So, are you convinced you want to tackle the spring clean? If so, it’s best to start by getting an overview of everything you want to get done. Then break the tasks down into individual stages. No home needs to be cleaned from top to bottom in a single day. You can organise the tasks by type (e.g. cleaning windows, wiping down cupboards, sorting out the wardrobe) or tackle them room by room. Make a checklist. This will keep you motivated and show you what you’ve already achieved.
One last thing before you get started: the tools. Here’s what you’ll usually need for a spring clean:
- Window cleaner
- All-purpose cleaner
- Sponges
- Microfibre cloths
- Bucket
- Vacuum cleaner
- Bags for old clothes
- Mop
- Vinegar, bicarbonate of soda
Would you like to know how the professionals do it? Their most important tip is to work from top to bottom. That means first removing the cobwebs from the ceiling and the layers of dust from the lampshade. Next, tackle the shelves. Work your way from the corner furthest from the door towards the door. Vacuum and mop right at the end. This prevents any dirt created during cleaning from being spread around again. The rooms you enter most frequently should be left until last.
A short checklist for spring cleaning
These ten tasks should be included in your spring cleaning:
- Decluttering – from wardrobes to desk drawers
- Descaling taps and cleaning drains
- Washing carpets and curtains
- Cleaning lamps and cabinet surfaces
- Polishing all surfaces
- Vacuuming
- Cleaning windows
What’s happening at the Lemongarden Hotel at the moment?
At the Lemongarden Hotel, Croatia’s most beautiful hideaway, the team is also hard at work mopping, vacuuming and washing. But DIY tasks, such as repairing damage to furniture, are now also on the agenda. Before we can welcome our guests back soon for another unforgettable season by the sea, we also need to finalise the menus, do the shopping and check that all existing facilities are in good working order. And of course, we haven’t forgotten the fleet: our boats, bicycles and Mini Cooper fleet are also getting a spring clean.
