A Hotel with a Unique Character in Croatia
Translating the term “Heritage Hotel” into German already gives the first clue as to the type of accommodation, since “Heritage” means “legacy.” A Heritage Hotel therefore has a rich history and a special tradition. They are often housed in buildings such as old farmhouses, castles, country estates, or even palaces. Because it is not a legally protected term, it is often impossible to draw a precise distinction between them and other hotels. One thing is certain, however: anyone who stays at a genuine Heritage Hotel can feel the history of the ancient walls with every breath.
A Prestigious Address
Preserving a place’s individuality and tradition is also important to Helena Ramsbacher, the owner of the Hotel Lemongarden. After all, she purchased several old stone buildings right on Sutivan’s harbor promenade in order to preserve them and restore them to their former glory.
They were once the historic residence of the wealthy Ilić noble family, who made a name for themselves as allies of Venice in the fight against the Turks. In addition to their military service, the family succeeded in establishing a Europe-wide wine and olive oil trade. Together with the two influential families, the Kavanjins and the Definis, the Ilić family shaped the appearance and economy of Sutivan. After the end of the noble dynasty, parts of the estate fell into increasing disrepair.
Experience History
Of course, guests at the Heritage Hotel Lemongarden enjoy modern comforts. These range from first-class service to state-of-the-art amenities in the suites and exceptional cuisine. Yet traces of history are still visible everywhere. This is also ensured by strict compliance with historic preservation regulations.
On the west side, right by the harbor, stands the historic defense tower, for example. It is the oldest part of the property, recognizable by its Gothic windows. From here, the harbor was defended against pirates. Less visible, but still worth noting: the foundation of the Ilić Dvor building rests on wooden piles in the water—entirely in the Venetian style. Anyone strolling past the thick stone walls of Sutivan’s only hotel today will also notice 19th-century neoclassical elements on the façade of the Definis Dvor.
