Why Even the Jam at Hotel Lemongarden Is Special
It is often the little things that sweeten our day. The chirping of birds, a gentle sea breeze, a bright blue sky or a smile given to us are all examples. At Hotel Lemongarden, moments like these accompany guests throughout the day. And it starts as early as breakfast by the sea. Because even the jam at Hotel Lemongarden is something special.

Homemade and Fresh
Anyone who sits down for breakfast directly by the harbour in the morning and enjoys a piece of crispy pastry with jam alongside wonderfully fragrant coffee can taste it straight away: the jam at Hotel Lemongarden is homemade. Fruity strawberry, raspberry and apricot jam, as well as delicious orange and lemon marmalade, crown the day from the very beginning.
But the homemade jam does not only impress with its flavour. It also stands out in terms of quality, seasonality and regionality. The fruit for the lemon and orange marmalade comes directly from our garden. It simply could not be fresher or more regional.
The lemon trees in Croatia bloom mainly between March and May, often several times. This means that flowers and fruit can sometimes be seen on the same tree at the same time. Under the warm Croatian sun, the lemons and oranges at Hotel Lemongarden have all the time in the world to ripen slowly and develop their full flavour. They are then harvested in winter, usually between November and March. Lemons do not continue to ripen after being picked, which is why the fruit can remain on the trees until it is used.
Jam or Marmalade?
Our delicious jams and marmalades are then made by hand with great care from the very best fruit. The difference? Although both types of spread are made from fruit, according to EU regulations it is officially only marmalade when the ingredients are citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons. Otherwise, the correct term is jam. Either way, the most important thing is that it tastes delicious.
But who actually invented marmalade? Sweet fruit spreads have been known for a very long time. It is said that even the ancient Romans ate sweetened plum purée, at least according to archaeological finds. In Great Britain, where pieces of peel in marmalade are particularly popular, a recipe for orange marmalade is known from the year 1677. However, it was first produced commercially in Dundee, Scotland, towards the end of the 18th century. In 1797, the Keiller family founded the world’s first marmalade factory there.
The jam at Hotel Lemongarden is, of course, not the only remarkable natural product that delights our guests. The honey also comes from the immediate neighbourhood. If you listen carefully in the garden, you may even witness busy bees flying from one fragrant blossom to the next. The intense scent of the lemon trees successfully attracts them. The bougainvilleas also provide them with a popular source of food.
The Marčić family in the nearby town of Bol looks after numerous beehives and countless bees with great dedication. Through excellent teamwork, a delicious honey is created, which guests at Hotel Lemongarden can enjoy at breakfast.
