For the more experienced: St. Juraj Trail

Together, the cycle paths on Brač cover an incredible 1,000 kilometres. The longest and most challenging route among them is the St. Juraj Trail. It is 180 kilometres long and takes you right across the entire island. The route starts in the small town of Supetar. This is located about seven kilometres east of the Hotel Lemongarden. Part of the route also takes in the highest point on Brač, Vidova Gora.

The route winds its way back to Supetar through small villages, past olive groves and along stretches of coastline. The cycle path runs mostly along tarmac roads, but given its length and hilly terrain, you’ll need to be reasonably fit. After all, the journey takes around 5.5 hours. Anyone who completes the entire trail can collect a certificate from the tourist office in Supetar, which awards you the honorary title of “King of Brač” or “Queen of Brač”.

Leisurely bike rides on Brač

Of course, you can also take a more leisurely approach to a cycling trip on Brač. For instance, you can follow the 15-kilometre-long St. Roko (Sv. Roko) route from Supetar via Mirca to Sutivan. It is flat, with an elevation gain of just 70 metres. The fact that the route mostly follows the coastline makes for a very scenic ride. The paths are all paved, and where you do follow a road, there is little traffic. Olive groves and pine forests provide shade. In Sutivan, you should pay a visit to the small chapel of St. Spyridon.

The 10.4-kilometre circular route, which starts and ends in the village of Milna on the island’s west coast, is also known as the “Fortress & Lantern”. It leads westwards along the coast to the historic Baterija fortress and finally to the Ražanj lighthouse, before taking cyclists back to Milna. It is of moderate difficulty, thanks to the gentle gradients and the short distance. The combination of tarmac roads and easily navigable gravel paths makes cycling a fairly straightforward affair. The silence that descends upon the landscape here is particularly enchanting.

A classic cycle route for keen cyclists

The so-called Ružmarin Trail is well known to many cycling enthusiasts. It is a moderately challenging route, around 20 kilometres long. Depending on your pace, it takes about one and a half to two hours to complete; it starts and ends in Bol. Along the route, you can admire vineyards and olive groves, explore the countryside and cycle partly along the coast. Beautiful views and the stunning natural surroundings are just as popular photo opportunities as the Dominican monastery. As there are a few gentle inclines, it is one of the cycle routes on Brač that even occasional cyclists can manage. The nature of the paths also helps: tarmac, gravel and forest floor provide a pleasant surface.

Those with an interest in culture will appreciate the Česmina Cycle Route. The trail is a family-friendly circular route approximately 24 kilometres long. It starts and ends at Brač Airport. As you pass through some of the island’s oldest inhabited regions, encounter several small churches and also reach the abandoned village of Straževnik, the ride is guaranteed not to be boring.
